Congressman Posey’s Statement on the State of the Union Address
Washington,
January 25, 2011
Congressman Bill Posey released the following statement in regards to tonight’s State of the Union Address:
“It was a good speech but the real test will come in a few weeks when we see if the President’s budget plan matches up with what was said tonight,” said Congressman Posey. “We need to enact policies which will create the right kind of environment for businesses of every size to grow and hire more workers. A large part of that effort must involve fixing our financial situation, ending excessive deficits, restraining spending and devising a meaningful plan for debt reduction. I’ve said in the past that this is no easy task, but it is necessary that we try now and not kick the can further down the road. Doing so only makes our situation worse. “The President’s proposed freeze acknowledges that spending has been Washington’s biggest problem. Unfortunately, a spending freeze will lock in the record spending levels of the past two years which are unsustainable. We need to place every expenditure under the microscope and cut the excesses so that Washington will begin to live within its means. “I’m disappointed the President didn’t say much about accountability. Nobody’s been held accountable for the financial crisis. Government agencies that were supposed to enforce the law, didn’t, and were rewarded with bigger budgets, greater responsibility and more authority. Government policies actually contributed to the financial crisis and those policies still haven’t been changed.” |
