Speaker Says: “You Can Read the Bill AFTER it Passes”
Washington,
March 9, 2010
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said yesterday of health care reform legislation: “We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.”
Congressman Bill Posey (R-FL) disagreed, saying “I think America would rather know what’s in the bill before it’s passed and becomes law. And while the more than 2,000 plus page document is being drafted, C-SPAN cameras are still locked out of the negotiating room. This process is seriously lacking in transparency and accountability.” Last summer Posey introduced H. Res. 689, legislation to amend the Rules of the House to require a 72 hour period of public availability before legislation can be brought up for final consideration in the House of Representatives. It also requires that a comparative print showing specifically how the proposed legislation changes current law be made available at least 72 hours before consideration of the bill |
