Legislation
Balanced Budget Amendment (H.J. Res. 1)
Washington,
May 27, 2009
Congressman Posey is a cosponsor of the Balanced Budget Amendment, legislation that would amend the U.S. Constitution to require the federal government to balance the budget every year by prohibiting Congress from spending more than it takes in annually. This proposed amendment would also require a three fifths vote by both houses of Congress in order to raise the public debt limit and that a roll call vote be taken on all votes to raise taxes. With this year’s deficit likely to exceed $1.7 trillion, this amendment is strongly needed. It includes a waiver for operating under a declared war or during circumstances where there is a military conflict. H.J. Res. 1 also directs the President to submit to Congress a balanced budget.
