Committee Approves Posey’s Weather Monitoring Proposal
Washington,
November 16, 2021
The House Science, Space & Technology Committee adopted Congressman Bill Posey’s (R-Rockledge) amendment to increase commercial participation and to provide for greater security for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio. Posey’s proposal was added to legislation to upgrade and modernize NOAA’s Weather Radio All Hazards network (H.R. 5324, the NWR Modernization Act of 2021).
“This amendment will not only help ensure a continuity of the radio service during extreme weather events but also examine ways to secure the system from the effects of an electromagnetic pulse or geomagnetic disturbances which could be quite damaging,” said Posey. Specifically, Posey’s amendment ensures that NOAA includes commercial partners when they develop options concerning satellite backup capability for the NOAA Weather Radio along with requiring an assessment, accompanied by recommendations, on the potential effects of an electromagnetic pulse or geomagnetic disturbance on the NOAA Weather Radio. |
