Congressman Posey’s Statement Honoring Our Nation’s Veterans

Melbourne, FL, November 11, 2010 - Congressman Bill Posey (R-Rockledge) released the following statement honoring the many brave men and women who have sacrificed so much to serve in our nation’s Armed Forces:

“Today, we honor our nation’s veterans; those who have given of themselves to defend and protect our liberties including those veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice so that future generations of Americans could enjoy the promise of our great nation. It is also a time that we renew our commitment to caring for those who have served our nation in uniform.

“Last week I was reminded of just how costly a sacrifice our soldiers and their families make for our freedom. I had the distinct honor of presenting the Congressional Medal of Merit to a constituent and decorated war veteran, Army Staff Sergeant Paul “Russ” Marek, who suffered severe injuries when his tank was destroyed by an ‘IED’ during his second tour of duty in Iraq. Against all odds, Sergeant Marek is making great progress and we honor him for his service on his pathway to recovery.

“Marek is only one of those great American heroes that we salute on this day. But there are so many other heroes that we honor, including the 27 World War II veterans that I had the privilege of greeting early one morning several weeks ago as they prepared to embark on their honor flight to Washington, D.C. to pay their respects at our national war memorials.

“Each year we set aside November 11th as a special day to recognize the self-sacrificing service of America’s veterans. It is because of their efforts that the world changed for the better and that our nation, and our freedom, has been made stronger.

“I encourage all Americans to take a moment to remember the countless military families for their sacrifices and the role they play in supporting our veterans during and after their service. We also salute our courageous soldiers who are currently serving on the battlefields abroad.

“May God bestow upon our servicemen and women the divine guidance to keep them safe and lead them to victory. God bless them and may God bless America.”
