Posey Announces 2010 Congressional Art Competition Winners

The Osceola Center for the Arts hosted Congressman Bill Posey’s first Congressional Art Competition, titled ‘An Artistic Discovery,’ for high school students on Saturday, May 15th. The competition drew an amazing 84 entries from students across the 15th Congressional District which encompasses Osceola, Brevard, Indian River and Polk Counties.

“At the root of all success in life lies creativity,” said Congressman Posey. “I’m proud of the effort put forth by every student who accepted the challenge and entered the competition this year. Central Florida is home to some truly talented young artists.”

“I want to thank everyone who helped coordinate and sponsor the competition; Brevard Culture Alliance, Bright House Networks, Art Expressions, Southwest Airlines and Savannah College of Art and Design. I also want to thank the judges and of course the staff of the Osceola Center for the Arts for volunteering their time to inspire a new generation of young artists,” added Posey.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents.  Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nation-wide competition.

“This is a great example of community spirit and involvement for visual arts in Florida’s 15th District, with the combined efforts of Congressman Posey, his staff, the teachers, sponsors and these talented students – over 80 pieces of artwork were on display,” said Director of Visual Arts, Jules Davidson.

Osceola State Representative Mike Horner (FL District 79), who was in attendance on Saturday morning,  added, “I am so pleased to learn that the students were given this opportunity and that two Osceola County students have been awarded national recognition!”

“It is delightful to see the inspiration of the student’s heart and spirit on display for this event,” said Artist/Judge, Cathy Ferrell.
