Two Blue Ribbon Schools Named in Florida’s 15th Congressional District

Two of Florida’s 15th Congressional District schools were named 2009 Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education today. Cocoa Beach Jr. /Sr. High, and Ralph M. Williams Elementary School were named for outstanding performance in accordance with Florida’s state assessments.

“It’s a wonderful achievement for the hardworking teachers and students in our community,” said Congressman Bill Posey. “To be named a Blue Ribbon School means you’re a rising star and an example for others to follow.”

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private schools that are academically superior or have shown dramatic improvement in student achievement to high levels, especially among disadvantaged students. The program requires schools to meet either of two assessment criteria. It recognizes schools that have at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance in accordance with state assessment systems; and it rewards schools that score in the top 10 percent on state assessments.
