Congressman Posey’s Statement Honoring the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing
Washington,
July 20, 2009
Congressman Bill Posey (R-Rockledge) issued the following statement in regard to the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing:
“We sometimes take for granted the numerous benefits and spinoffs we enjoy from space exploration. Today we recognize President Kennedy’s vision to support the great explorers of our lifetime—the Christopher Columbuses, Magellans and Marco Polos. At the same time he proved that the free enterprise system of the United States would outperform the Soviet Union in the international challenge of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. “One of the highlights of my life was the opportunity to work on the Apollo program as a young man, when McDonnell Douglas was a contractor for the third stage. What a privilege it was to work alongside the thousands of men and women who made this historic achievement possible. Let us also remember that their legacy continues in today’s exemplary Space Shuttle workforce, who safely and efficiently work to ensure the completion of the Shuttle’s remaining flight manifests. “As we hear many times, America’s space program is the only program for which the United States is undeniably, unequivocally and universally respected. Hopefully we will continue to maintain the leading edge in space under the leadership of President Obama.” |
