Vero Beach Veteran to be Awarded Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device for Past Bravery

On Wednesday, January 24th, Specialist Four Andrew Thorry of Vero Beach will be awarded his Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device fifty years after courageously serving our nation during the Vietnam War. Rep. Posey’s office worked with the Department of the Army to help secure the medal for Thorry. The Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device is worn to denote participation in acts of heroism involving conflict with an armed enemy.

The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Indian River County Administration Complex Building A in the Commission Chambers in Vero Beach.

“It is a great privilege to award Andrew Thorry with the Bronze Star Medal with ‘V’ Device for his courageous actions while serving our nation,” said U.S. Rep. Bill Posey. “His bravery under fire from the enemy helped save the lives of other American soldiers on the field of battle.”

On February 8, 1968, while serving as a radio telephone operator, Specialist Thorry received a call from a squad of another platoon saying they were low on ammunition and needed help. Specialist Thorry related this information to his platoon leader and immediately began gathering men for the purpose of relieving the troubled squad. He continuously exposed himself to the enemy fire as he moved from one position to another gathering the necessary men. Specialist Thorry and his group of men laid down a base of fire which enabled the troubled squad to reach safety.
