Posey Proposal Included in House-passed Flood Insurance Bill

A reform measure by Congressman Bill Posey (R-Rockledge) was included in H.R. 2874, the 21st Century Flood Reform Act, which was approved by the House of Representatives this week. Posey’s proposal helps the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) update floodplain maps.

“We need to get the mapping right,” said Congressman Posey, a longtime realtor and member of the House Financial Services Committee. “In many cases we haven’t updated our floodplain maps in 20 years. This proposal will help us do that cheaper, faster, and more accurately.”

Specifically Posey’s floodplain mapping reform proposal requires the Department of Defense, US Geological Survey, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to share all their relevant maps for flood insurance purposes with FEMA. This simple and straight forward language will reform the way floodplain maps are produced, calling on the already existing resources of other agencies that produce similar maps. This will save time, money and reduce duplication. The 21st Century Flood Reform Act reauthorizes the federal flood insurance program for 5 years while giving consumers greater choices for coverage.
