House Passes Legislation to Assist Military Veterans

The U.S. House of Representatives passed several pieces of legislation with the support of Congressman Bill Posey (R-Rockledge) to expand employment opportunities for our military veterans, better protect veterans from identity theft, and further hold Department of Veterans Affairs employees accountable for poor job performance.

“Our military service veterans have given so much to defend our nation and protect our liberties. We must honor our commitments to them and their families for their service and their sacrifices for our nation,” said Congressman Posey.

Specifically, the House passed the following bills to support our military veterans:

• H.R. 474 - Homeless Veterans' Reintegration Programs Reauthorization Act: Reauthorizes important job training programs for community organizations that serve homeless veterans.

• H.R. 1816 - Vulnerable Veterans Housing Reform Act: Excludes in-home aid and attendance care benefits paid to severely disabled veterans for their service-connected disabilities from the income calculation that the Department of Housing and Urban Development uses to determine public housing or Section 8 rental assistance payments.

• H.R. 1313 - Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business Relief Act: Allows a surviving spouse of a veteran who has a service-connected disability rating of less than 100% to retain the veterans small business status through the VA’s “Vet’s First” program for up to three years following the veteran’s death.

• H.R. 1382 - Boosting Rates of American Veteran Employment Act: Gives preference to government contractors who employ veterans on a fulltime basis and disqualifies contractors who misrepresent their veteran status.

• H.R. 91 – Veteran’s I.D. Card Act: Directs the Secretary to provide an ID card to any honorably discharged veterans who is not a retired member of the Armed Forces or who is enrolled in the VA healthcare system.

• H.R. 1038 - Ensuring VA Employee Accountability Act: Requires the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to maintain all written reprimands and admonishments that a VA employee receives for their entire employment with the VA.
