Posey: New 2,000 Page Health Care Reform Proposal Should Be Subject to Open Legislative Process

U.S. Representative Bill Posey (R-FL), released the below statement following Speaker Pelosi’s announcement that she has drafted a new health care reform bill. The bill includes elements of the earlier version of the Majority’s health care reform proposal, H.R. 3200, including higher taxes, significant long-term unfunded liabilities, a higher national debt, and more government control over health care.

“Following several months of secret deal-making the Speaker has revealed today, yet another health care reform bill. Today is the first day that this bill has seen the light of day and been open to public scrutiny. It is my hope that this bill will now be subject to regular Congressional hearings and mark-up processes so that it can be fully vetted by the Congress and the American people rather than imposed by fiat from on high.”

A Rasmussen poll released Monday found that only 18% of Americans believe that the plan being crafted in Washington will improve the quality of health care and only 23% believe it will lower their costs.  “The American people have caught onto the trick and if this legislation doesn’t go through the regular committee review process then that process is nothing more than a charade,” said Posey.

“I’m ready to work with Democrats in the House to address the shortcomings in our nation’s health care system, but I will not be a party to Democrat’s efforts to impose a Washington-style government-run health care plan. I am proud to support several solutions that have been introduced by my House Republican colleagues. We need to fix what’s broken and we can do it without creating a new, massive and unaffordable government health care plan.”

Rep. Posey has called for a full, fair, and open debate on the new proposed health care bill where all Members of Congress will have an opportunity to offer amendments and provide their input to help address America’s health care needs. President Obama committed to the American people that their Representatives in Congress would have this opportunity. Click Here to see the commitment. Unfortunately, Congressional Leaders are planning to bypass this process with their new bill. This makes a mockery of the legislative process that took place earlier this summer now that the whole bill has been re-written in secret.
