Posey Challenges Congress to Make Space a Priority In House Floor Speech

As Congress approaches the completion of the appropriations for next year’s NASA budget, Congressman Bill Posey once again challenged Congressional leaders to make NASA and our nation’s human space program a priority in a House floor speech. Posey represents Cape Canaveral and thousands of Kennedy Space Center employees who face an uncertain future due to the impending retirement of the Space Shuttle with no replacement vehicle on the horizon.

“I’m not going to let America cede her leadership role in space exploration without a fight,” said Congressman Posey, who worked on the Apollo program as a young man. “Our investment in manned space flight and space exploration has yielded so many technological and scientific contributions to the advancement of this country and all of humanity – Members of Congress have to know how important it is to continue this work.”

In April, Posey was joined by Rep Debbie Wasserman-Schultz in introducing legislation (H.R. 1962, the American Space Access Act) that would close America’s human space flight gap by extending the life of the Space Shuttle and providing additional funding to bring NASA next generation human space flight vehicle on line sooner. The Presidentially appointed U.S. Human Space Flight Plans Committee recently affirmed Posey’s assertion that additional funding is needed to close the space gap.
