The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has delayed until mid-October the release of a study conducted on contaminated drywall imported from China. There are approximately 6 brands of drywall which have been in use in the U.S. since 2004 that are considered to be harmful; and a number of housing developments in Indian River County have reported problems.

“It’s important for homeowners to report any problems they are experiencing,” said U.S. Rep. Bill Posey (R-Rockledge). “My staff and I have met with a number of families and individuals dealing with this issue and I am working with other Members of Congress to piece together an accurate description of the problems these families are facing.”

Problems with certain brands of drywall were only discovered in 2008. Since then the CPSC has been conducting more extensive tests on 50 homes located in Florida, Louisiana, Virginia, and Alabama to diagnose the health and corrosion issues encountered by homeowners with the affected drywall. Over 70% of homes identified with the drywall are in Florida.

Along with being a member of the bipartisan Chinese Drywall Caucus, Posey is a co-sponsor of the Drywall Safety Act of 2009, (H.R. 1977) which instructs the CPSC to study drywall that was imported from China from 2004 through 2007 and used in U.S. residences.
