Congressman Posey’s Statement Observing Memorial Day

Congressman Bill Posey (R-Rockledge) released the following statement in observance of Memorial Day:

“For many generations now, dating as far back as to the end of the Civil War, our fellow Americans established the tradition of presenting flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers on what was known at the time as Decoration Day. In 1971, Congress set apart the last Monday in May as a national holiday for remembering and honoring the men and women who have died during service in the U.S. Military declaring it Memorial Day.

“In what is a time of reflection and remembrance, on this day we consider those who did not hesitate when called upon to solemnly swear to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against our enemies and made the ultimate sacrifice. On every battlefield a price was paid all too often that we will never fully repay.

“On Memorial Day we are called upon to remember those who have died in service of the United States of America and in so, doing we embrace the words of the immortal hymn which declares: O beautiful for patriot dream, that sees beyond the years.

“As we reflect on their sacrifice for us, let us also remember in our prayers and thoughts the loved ones they left behind, for they feel that loss most each day. For their courage, their service and their sacrifice, we owe our brave fallen heroes, and all those in uniform who serve our nation, a tremendous debt of gratitude.”
