This week Congressman Bill Posey (R-Rockledge) offered testimony before the House Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee on the Interior and Environment in support of the National Estuary Program. His testimony emphasized the ongoing success of the National Estuary Program and highlighted important improvements made by last year’s reauthorization.

“The National Estuary Program empowers local communities to take responsibility for managing their estuaries, and brings together a diverse group of experts and concerned citizens to address threats to these delicate ecosystems,” said Congressman Posey. “The program correctly recognizes that the people, whose livelihoods are directly connected to protecting and restoring the health of our estuaries, are in the best position to use taxpayer money responsibly and achieve demonstrable results.”

“I applaud Rep. Posey for his support of the National Estuary Program and I look forward to working with him to ensure the funding provided for the program results in improvements on the ground in our country’s estuaries,” said Interior and Environment Subcommittee Chairman Ken Calvert.

Last year Congress passed and the President signed into law legislation to reauthorize the National Estuary Program which included Posey’s bipartisan plan to reprioritize existing federal funds so more money is available for estuaries with critical needs like the Indian River Lagoon. The National Estuary Program was created in the 1987 Clean Water Act Amendments to protect and restore water quality and ensure ecological health of estuaries of national significance.
